When it comes to risk and adventure, I’m much more of an arm chair adventurer—which means I would rather read about it than actually do the adventure. Eric Sprinkle is an avid adventurer. His viewpoint shines in these forty devotions in ADVENTURE DEVOS. Each one begins with a stirring black and white photo, a short personal adventure experience from Eric, transitioning to a short Bible story and three “Dares†(the application portion of the devotion). Each devotion includes a bold simple application statement such as “You can’t plow straight when you’re looking over your shoulder.â€Sprinkle has combined forces with Sam ‘Samantha†Evans for this well-crafted devotional. It makes a perfect gift for any Christian man. I enjoyed it and read it cover to cover. I highly recommend ADVENTURE DEVOS.W. Whether you're a thrill-seeker or prefer living vicariously from a comfy armchair, there's something in this devotional for everyone. The stories are fun and often hilarious, and illustrate biblical truths in a contemporary way that anyone can understand and relate to. The applications (in the form of dares...as in triple-dog-dares!) are challenges that anybody can try, worthwhile exercises that can't help but strengthen the reader's relationship with Christ. One of my favorites is the very last one, in which the authors' individual experiences of getting hopelessly stuck in the mud...well, you'll have to read it yourself to see how it all comes out, but as the devo states, "this is the gospel in one slimy nutshell!"
As a Pastor and a Scoutmaster, I am always looking for devotionals that can speak to the young men I work with (in both settings). Adventure Devos will be the book that I keep with me to "Be Prepared" to lead an exiting discussion of biblical truth wherever I find myself, from the deepest woods to my comfortable study! Extremely well written, very approachable.
I got a advanced readers copy in exchange for a honest review. I loved the voice of the writer, I felt right beside him on some of his adventures. I think many men will enjoy this and find it useful in their Christian journey.
I do not hike, climb, whitewater or even run, and I cannot stand leeches or polar plunges! So why am I reading this? Because the messages and illustrations of rock climbing, whitewater rafting and the other stories did indeed help me unpack biblical insights. Finally, although being very selective, the dares were helpful in the challenges of everyday life. This devotional did make God's word enjoyable through out the pages. I will take the last dare and share the book in the ways suggested and yes, even the "triple dog dare!
A friend gave this book to my husband as a gift. I thought I’d take a look and see what it was all about and I couldn’t put it down! There's something in this devotional for everyone and I recommend this book for both men and women who are looking to take their faith to the next level. You will absolutely love the stories and illustrations and the way it relates daily life to adventures with God!
We bought this book early in the summer, in its first printing. Both my husband and I have enjoyed the stories and the ways the authors have used their life stories to help teach scriptural truths. They are great short devos to use in small groups, as discussion starters, or for self-reflection. Though it is marketed for men, I have enjoyed the stories and many of them resonated with my soul. I look forward to more from these authors!
