The story of Pan Am's downfall is tragic. My father was so proud to have worked there as a mechanic for 31 years. But as a kid, I remember how scared he was for more than a decade that he could lose his job. Then one day he did. I will never forget coming home from school as he sat on the couch staring blankly out the living room window. All he said was "It's finally over." By that time I was a freshman in college. He made me promise to finish my degree. He didn't have one and he said, "they can take away your job, but they will never take away that piece of paper that says you accomplished something. A college degree means you have options." He died 5 months later at the age of 53. I remember him saying how an announcement was made telling them to leave that last day. "Pan Am is bankrupt and out of business. You have 15 minutes to leave the building." There were armed security guards pad locking all the doors behind them. This book not only details the tragedy, but makes me understand my father more. It had to have been hell to have pride in a place you worked for 31 years only to have it end in the most undignified manner ever. Pan Am stole from their employees. What happened to all those employees was criminal.

This is a very readable account of what was at one time the best airline in the World but one that did not move with the times. The arrogance that was perpetuated because of the previous good times and the companys rapid demise following deregulation of the industry are saddening when you look at all the loyal people that thought so much about the company but were led by senior management who were way out of touch. The airline industry is full of many of the latter. Having been involved in many aspects of aviation for over 50 years and personally seeing majot mistakes made in our region too,the Pan Am story is a must read for any person getting involved in airline management and the distribution process. If only Pan Am had been able to get domestic feeds into its international routes the airline might still be with us. I remember those very smart uniforms and extremely pretty flight attendants. They sure had wow in their hey day.

Gandt goes beyond the nitty gritty facts and brings out the character and characters of the Pan Am employees. Some sad and depressing and some very whimsical. He also highlights how politics and inept government agencies can make or break a corporation. Greasing the appropriate palms can make all the difference in preferential consideration or being ignored. The airline industry went through tough times back then and there were winners and losers, Pan Am was a loser and bad management didn't help in their fight for survival. Great insight into airline history.

If you read "American Saga" on Juan Trippe and the history of Pan Am, this is the perfect follow-on book to read, providing strong detail to the final years of Pan Am as Robert Daley did for its earlier years in American Saga. I particularly liked this, written from the aviator's perspective. Gandt's story telling style was well paired to the history he's reporting. Even though I knew how it was going to end, I was cheering and optimistic that somehow the Pan Am execs would pull it out...was hoping for an alternate ending. It's just that kind of book.Because I so enjoyed Gandt's story-telling style, I'm now reading his "Twilight Warriors" written from the Navy aviators' point of view on the Battle of Okinawa, and plan to also read his "China Clipper."

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's not the glossy glamour recounting recipe that many others have followed, but rather the view from a 60's pilot as he signed on and hoped to make some rank with Pan Am. I found it very candid in the recounting of operations and showed that the airline was a collection of humans, all of whom have the potential to run amok at times. This is a great book that I've already loaned out for the enjoyment of others.

Fantastic. Marvelous. And any other superlative you might want to use. Gandt really makes you feel like an sider as he flies you through Pan Am’s glory days, it’s agonizing decline, and its demise. I’d give the book 10 stars if you’d let me.The story has a tremendous human element, with the stories of pilots and company leaders woven in masterfully.Gandt was very forthright in highlighting Pan Am’s arrogance. I can speak to this personally from a distance. I’ve lived in Brazil since 1968, and have traveled back and forth many times. Never on Pan Am. The arrogance started at the local ticket office. Those who’d flown with the airline reinforced those impressions. Even, I was sad to see things end as they did.

This is a fascinating account of the history and sad demise of what may be remembered as a national treasure - a truly international airline that developed American aviation throughout much of the world. The author describes well the culture of a once great company, the strengths that became its weakness, and the parallel history of the rise and fall of several of its competitors into the jet age. A great read for anyone interested in the history of commercial aviation.

Wow. I expected this book to be good, but it’s not. It’s GREAT! The facts, the stories, the humor are all excellent, but the writing is OUTSTANDING. Seriously, the author is gifted.I loved this book. If you are interested in business cases, you will love how this story tells about how Pan Am came and went. And if you’re an aviator or aviation buff, you’ll love the stories, many fun, many tragic, but all riveting.
