This book is a great introduction to drilling, but not without its troubles. Devereux accomplishes what he sets out to do by giving a comprehensive overview of the the industry with as little jargon as possible. Most of the discussion and accompanying figures are easily understood, helpful, and enjoyable.The troubles start with vague and unclear writing. Sure the language is simple, but the writing often leads to confusion with ambiguous subject and object references. There are also factual issues, the first of which is encountered on page four as a reference to the mantle as liquid rock. This, and other inaccuracies, leaves the reader questioning the possibility of other mistakes. Some figure number references are questionable. Overall this book could use a serious revision.
Great book. I am a strategy analyst at an oil and gas company and this book helps me refresh on any aspect of the oilfield before beginning new projects or before heading into a meeting.
Well what can I say. I have read the book. its interesting but lit confused to read because of some missing information that yo need to understand before you do. After reading once and try to read over again, I had to stop it. But I would recommend

The book explained the field well, but it referred, more than once, to a non-existant 'further reading' section. It also referred to a list of acronyms, supposedly containted within, which wasn't in the book either. It could really use an editor.Diagrams were great, so were the pictures. It certainly did its job...but maybe not worth $60 plus.
I work as a translator in oil industry and this book is very helpful to me. The explanations are clear and easy to understand.
