Great hospitality towards first and second-time guests is a hot topic and an extremely helpful one for many congregations. Actions of hospitality that create wonderful experiences for guests can involve a large percentage of the congregation, and substitute for former tasks-oriented outreach activities that created guilt feelings among many congregational participants.Jason and Jonathan have written a wonderfully helpful book. The three chapters that most appealed to me were the ones on making hospitality a standard part of the congregational culture, to ingrain in and be motivated by the values of the congregations, and actions that seek to provide significance for the volunteers who cultivate hospitality relationships.
The thing I love so much about this book is the simple fact that Jonathan and Jason aren't trying to sell you on anything...other than learning to understand people so that we can do our best to make them feel comfortable. The concepts are transcendent because they don't have to be related strictly to the church. Making people feel comfortable is a universal concept. If you are dealing in hospitality in any way, but ESPECIALLY in the church, you need this book.
I have read a few good books on this subject. but I feel after reading them, that I really haven't learned anything new. I am always wanting something more from them. I was extremely excited about this book from the moment I started reading. It is engaging, has great info, encouragement, suggestions and helped me to think about some things I am doing and not doing. It gave me an encouraging perspective on this whole subject. I had some confirmations on some things and I learned some things. When I was finished reading, I was so excited I decided my whole team needs to read it. It is now a staple in my Guest Experience Ministry. I am looking forward to hopefully another book!!
This book contains great insight on how to make your church a welcoming place. It highlights things as regular attenders we miss, but guests notice. I appreciate the fact that neither author used the book as a place to 'brag' about their respective churches. These ideas can be used in every size church.
This book is long over due...churches across the US think it’s all about teaching & worship! Truthfully most people will decide if they are coming back before they even enter into the service. This book is fantastic! I read it in two days and could not put it down. After the first day of reading, I went back and ordered 20 more copies to give away to our Guest Services leaders at our church campus. I can’t recommend this book enough. Just buy it!
From the very first chapter I knew that this book was going to wreck everything that I thought I knew about church hospitality. This book has forever changed my vision of what it means to BE the Church instead of just simply doing what I’ve always been taught. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone!
