I don't usually write reviews, but I feel I owe this to Tim Richards for giving me what I've always wanted--someone to show me how to really play the piano. I am 68 years of age. I have never had piano lessons, and never wanted to play classical piano. I taught myself to play the chords and follow the melody line of a "fake" book. But I've always wanted to just sit down at the piano and kind of improvise and play the blues or boogie woogie. I've worked with the book now for 26 days-almost 4 weeks for approximately an hour a day. I am on Page 37. This book is like the Blues Bible. Tim takes you just at the right pace to learn what you need to know. And I can take his book at my own pace. I have learned from his book that it's all about the chords, and how to work them with the left and right hand to get the rhythm, harmony, and melody you desire. I couldn't do this by myself without the book because I wouldn't have the confidence to know I was doing the right thing, but now I know. I have tried learning from other books, but they were nothing like this one. This is the one. I downloaded all the demos he provided on the CD to my iTunes. They are great because they show you how the piece should sound, and that you are doing it correctly. I am really playing piano now! Thank you Tim.
God this is a great book!I can't say enough about this book if you're looking to make your way into the world of Blues and New Orleans style piano playing. This book is a direct pipeline to that world.I'm primarily a guitar player who has been spending a good amount of time at the piano in the last couple of years. I'm also a music book junkie. I've collected a personal library of music books, guitar books, piano books, etc. And of all the innumerable books I've collected, this one might be the best. Not just because of where it aims to take you, but because of its layout. I own books that contain much more musical information than this book contains, but none of the other books I own come remotely close to providing a layout that takes you from the most basic form of a style to exercises that are cool and very much akin to the foundation blocks that all the great players used to build their masterpieces, as quickly as this book does.I had some previous piano experience before starting in on this book, but by no means was it extensive. So although I wouldn't consider this book the best place to start for somebody that was starting piano or music exploration from scratch, I would consider it a great place to start for somebody looking to get to the the aforementioned piano styles that had at least a little bit of prior experience. Essentially a late beginner or early intermediate player. Or if you're like an unleashed pit bull and you DO want to start here from scratch it is doable if you're ready to really put the work in. The provided CD gives you a recording of almost every example and exercise in the book, so armed with that, it makes the knowledge in this book very accessible. The bottom line is that this is a great, great book. I highly recommend it not because it has more information in it than any other book but because of the way that information is presented. It reconstructs blues piano from the ground up, and encourages you to understand all the building blocks so that you can start playing something pleasing and even improvising quickly. It also lays the material in front of you in such a way that you can quickly understand how all the building blocks fit together to construct the music. I've seen a lot of books that have more information but at the end still leave you wondering as to how all that information really fits together to make something "musical". This book does a superior job at giving you the knowledge to make something musical in the blues piano idiom right from the beginning.Tim Richards deserves to be commended for the amount of work, insight, and vision that went into making this book. After I got my hands on this book I soon after got every other book that Tim Richards wrote based on how great this one was. I got all of his other books despite the fact that I will be using this book for years to come, and who knows when I'll have the time to get into his other works.
This is probably the best blues piano book out there. It starts out fairly basic, but quickly expands to an intermediate or advanced level. It's a very comprehensive book printed on high-quality, glossy paper. I also like the blues biographies that are included with each section. My only complaint might be that it isn't spiral bound, but a book this size would be difficult to produce in a spiral-bound format. If you are an absolute beginner, this may be too advanced and you might consider starting out with something like Faber & McLean's "Blues Improv" book. But, after working your way through that (short) introduction, this book by Tim Richards will take you the rest of the way home. Highly recommended.
This book is recommended for intermediate-level pianists. I have some previous experience self-learning the piano, and I also have some knowledge of how to read music. But I am far from what I would consider to be intermediate-level pianist. I took a chance and bought this book anyway, and I'm really glad I did. I find the beginning lessons to be totally accessible to my skill level as basically a raw beginner. Now in saying this I don't mean that I can just sit down and play these pieces fluently. But they are certainly within reach with practice. In other words, they are pieces that I can actually play, but not smoothly without much practice. And this is mostly due to finger training and getting a feel for what Tim Richards calls "On-Off" rhythm timing. So I'm really pretty much starting from scratch here, yet I'm finding these beginning lessons in the Triads section of the book to be quite accessible.I really like the way he has his lessons laid out complete with many comments, tips, and special assignments to expand upon using improvisational techniques. So even as basically a raw beginner I find the book to be very accessible and useful. I'll be in the very early chapters for quite some time to come, so I can't comment on the more advance parts of the book. But for me, even just these early chapters are well worth the price. It's a super fantastic book, just filled to the brim with advice, explanations, assignments, and comments on every page. No wasted space in this book.Like some others have said, Just buy it. You can't go wrong.
