I actually left the hard copy on the plane. DOH! But I'd already used it to make a general plan and then broke down and bought the digital version from lonelyplanet.com. (On a side note, the digital version and my smart phone were way, way convenient and new additions to the backpacking experience, but the ebook didn't have any pictures and some of the general sections at the beginning were missing like the highlights.)This book gives a great overview of the country, and I always love the history and background sections in the beginning. In fact, I was able to have informed discussions and ask the good, information-gathering kind of questions about the revolution and political situation based almost entirely off what I read in the guidebook. I learned tons by talking to people while in Nicaragua too of course, but I wouldn't have know where to start or what to ask about without the LP crash course.Some of the info about restaurants and places to stay is outdated, but the edition is from 2009, so that's to be expected. But tripadvisor.com and hostelworld.com and even the loneley planet forums are the best places to get that sort of time sensitive information anyhow.I don't have much experience with any of the other guidebook brands, but I think a good rule of thumb is to go with the the one most recently published. Unless you're an LP diehard like me and you're willing to put in the extra research.
Excellent guidebook. Just returned from two weeks studying Spanish and traveling in Nicaragua and referred to this book constantly- and found it highly reliable. One more recommendation to add. Three members of our family (high school senior, college junior and myself) also took language classes at Escuela Colibri in Matagalpa (Safe and cooler city in the coffee district.) Instructors were all excellent teachers and very personable. On-par (and more fun than) Spanish language classes I have taken at undergrad and graduate level universities. Grammar is so much more interesting when you can take a break with your instructor to walk about the city, and practice talking about what you see. They offer very flexible options: group or one-on-one instruction, however many weeks you need - and blocks of classes in the mornings or afternoons. We had all had Spanish before- but they are great with students of all levels, including no previous Spanish and improving strong Spanish skills. We also did homestays with lovely families, and participated in some of the varied activities like tours, cooking classes, etc. VERY reasonable prices.Highly recommend. Wonderful experience!

I expected to buy an identical, digital version of the well known book edition, with digital facilities added. This is unfortunately not the case. Maps are very primitive copies of the original maps, but often spred over several pages, which make them hard or impossible to use. Several of the "click here" options dó not work or will direct you to the wrong pages. As there are no markings at the top of the pages, you have no idea of where in the book you are reading, and you therefore have to consult the Table f Contents over and ver again. All in all, it is complicated and time consuming to find one's way around. Very disappointing that Lonely Planet does not chose to take advantage of the digital media, and make an even better Kindle/Ipad book, which everyone would expect. At this moment the only advantage I care to mention is, that you can read it in the dark....
This was more a guide for backpackers and very low-budget travellers. I've not found that the case with other Lonely Planet guides (I'm a low- to medium-budget traveller). There was very little practical info on cities and towns and the maps were hard to read and not accurate in some places. I realize things are changing on Nicaragua, but it could have been a lot more informative. We had a great trip anyway!
this review is about the kindle edition only and not the content of the book. this did not transfer well into kindle. too often linked text does not bring you to the right place. kindle guidebooks should be great as the hyperlinks allow one to easily jump to different places in a book. however, many of the links will bring you to a seemingly random spot in the book instead of the intended place.additionally, one of my favorite features of lonely planet guides is the highlights section at the beginning of chapters. this transferred terribly to kindle - rendering the information unreadable. half of the information is lost. even by changing settings (smallest font size, line spacing, etc.) doesn't fully remedy the problem. i don't know why it's so messed up, but you lose great information this way.the guidebook has good information, but i would recommend people to steer clear of the kindle edition.
We used this book on a recent trip to Nicaragua. A lot of things are changing in Nicaragua and much of the information in this book is no longer accurate. We found the book to be a great guide in Granada. Every other city had obsolete information about hotels and restaurants. Trip Advisor and locals provided much better information.
I bought this for a friend that was going to Nicaragua, she got a lot of good information and had a great trip
