Full disclosure, I know the author, I worked with him at Pixar for a number of years. But before you discount my review because I am biased, I tell you this fact because it helps me paint a picture of what you will find in this book. Tony started his Pixar Career over a decade ago, all wide eyed and ready to take on the world. He approached his job, and life in general, with tremendous passion, kindness, he had such an enthusiasm for life. But while he loved making 3d worlds for film audiences everywhere, he really loved to draw and paint. And he was pretty good at it. But he wanted to be better. So he worked, and worked, he drew and drew, painted again and again. He dedicated himself to his goal, and seeing the results in this book, he has not only achieved his goal, but surpassed it in every way. All books tend to be somewhat autobiographical, but Eliot, the main character in this book, and his search for adventure, IS Tony. Eilot is wide eyed, has a tremendous love for life, is unendingly creative, and searching for adventure. And Tony is the same. I won't spoil the book by telling you if Eliot finds the adventure he seeks, but I can say that Tony did find what he was looking for, all his hard work has paid off and the result is a charming story perfectly supported by a set of mesmerizing paintings. His faces have such character, such cuteness, they just jump out of the page and grab you by the eyeballs. I am so proud of Tony, so impressed with all the hard work he put into this book, and so impressed with the final results, (hard work doesn't always lead to results this good). This is the kind of children's book that perfectly captures a young kid's sense of wonder and adventure, and I'm so happy that despite the difficulties we all experience as adults, Tony has not lost that kid's sense of wonder, and he has perfected his ability to communicate that wonder to his audience through story and pictures.
I still remember the first time I got my first glimpse of The Greatest Adventure- and it was definitely the art that caught my eye. The first word that came to my mind was "charming"; my heart felt warm looking at the characters' expressive faces and the spectacular perspectives that Tony Piedra creates by making sure I as the reader am beautifully in tune with Eliot and El Capitán through every surprise, every memory, and every delight. I was happy to see the story aligned with the joy of the art. As a lifelong avid fan of Calvin and Hobbes (you may be thinking, "WHA?? This art is NOTHING like that..." but bear with me), I am a strong believer in bravely seeking adventure no matter where you are, flexing your imagination every chance you get, and that adventures can be found anywhere are long as you are with a best friend.I grew up in the Bay Area, and Tony Piedra's connections to this area as a alum of Pixar and local Bay Area author/illustrator makes it even more attractive to me to support this adorable picture book.Finally, I have a dear relationship with my grandparents, and I think this is a sweet gift for any grandparent-grandchild to share! And perhaps this book will inspire some imaginative backyard adventures and sharing of past memories between generations.I have already recommended this book to my entire network (many of them have bought and love!) and plan to buy for my friends and family members with younger kids always seeking the next favorite picture book for bedtime!I cannot wait to see Tony Piedra's next book and what adventures this talented author/artist has in store for us!
This beautifully illustrated book has quickly become one of our daughter's favorites. She loves pouring over the gorgeous images on the page. The story is a wonderful one -- a tale of adventure, investing in relationships and creating something wonderful together. I had the privilege of meeting the author and artist, who used to work at Pixar and has won an illustration contest. He’s very friendly and genuine, and this is his first book. We were able to make a connection with my daughter’s daycare afterwards, and he’ll be visiting there to read the book, sharing some of the drawings he made as a kid and more! You can imagine how delighted this mom is.
The Greatest Adventure has some of the most beautiful art available in a kids book and a simple but endearing story.Elliot dreams adventures out of the things he sees around him and the art in this book puts the reader in Elliots perspective, seeing the world through his eyes.The city his grandpa takes him through is a land of concrete giants (skyscrapers) and large paper dragons. I love the way the illustrations capture Elliots sense of wonder about the city and everything him and his grandpa do together.
The story is uplifting. It as primarily being about a child's (Elliot) imagination and sense of wonder and his grandfather's promotion of it.His grandpa's stoking of Elliot's wonder and imagination also rekindles some of his energy and passion. The illustrations are fantastic intheir detail and the excitement and wonder that they evoke. There is also a sense of warmth throughout the story. The book is good length but the story ends quickly and to many children (<= 5 yr ) I don't think it will be obvious what is real and what is imagination. With my son I found that the ambiguity of reality created a conversation with him about imagination. What was real what was real? What was the great adventure was some of the discussions and questions we both had. Overall it is great book, good value, and the book is both about and evokes wonder. I hope this illustrator/author creates another book.
This Author must have absorbed the key of heartfelt storytelling in his previous Pixar career - the story is beautifully crafted, and ingeniously guides the reader through Eliot's curios eyes, his longing for adventure all the way to finding the true value of experiencing adventure in his imagination and loving connection to his grandfather. We surely will have to read Eliot's story (and linger on all the beautiful illustrations!!) to our son many, many more times ...
