I've always wanted to know more about Biology. I tried a number of different introductory books, and then I found this book which really explained things to me. The author explains the subject from the point of view of a physicist, explaining how biological systems work from the bottom up (i.e. from protons and electrons, and then to big biological molecules, to cells, and on upward until he explains how hummingbirds fly.) Along the way, the book also gives great descriptions of Physics concepts like Thermodynamics and dipoles which a layperson can understand. The book does a great job of covering a number of different scientific fields (physics, chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, statistical mechanics, proteomics, etc., inspiring the reader to go on to other books to learn more about these subjects.
The writing is clear and easy to understand but it's all a bunch of general information that I have yet to find particularly useful. It does have some good graphics though. The author also seems to ignore some very important concepts, like fluid mechanics and action potentials. This is more of an introduction to biochemistry than biophysics.
This book is kind hard. But if know biology and a good and little phisice it will be ok.
This introduction to biophysics is very well written and covers the basics in a very clear and easy to follow manner. The discussion on entropy was particularly clear and better than most physics textbooks treatments of the subject. I would definitely recommend it to those with even a basic knowledge of physics.

I got this book as a support for my lectures in a Bio-medical course.I doesn't cover exactly was expected. For premeds I need a more comprehensivesystem focused book. This book is more Chemistry less Physics and less BiologyGood for those courses engaged in Cell/molecular Biochem
