Trigiani is one of my favorite authors. That said, it is somewhat disappointing to me that she missed the mark (for me) this time. The story of Chi Chi Donatelli and Saverio Armandonada was neither "spellbinding" and it was one that did not hold my attention. Saverio Armandonada was a crooner (similar to Sinatra) and Chi Chi was a songwriter. They met on the Jersey shore and it took over one-third of the book before they became a couple. He becomes popular with the big bands, changes his name to Tony Arma. She writes a hit song and voila what could have been pages earlier, they meld. Unfortunately, he is a womanizer and throughout the years cannot stay true to his wife. There is more to this novel than what I'm divulging here, but suffice it to say, I wasn't into the story line, the writing wasn't as sharp as in her other books. For other fans of Trigiani I'm quite sure 4-5 stars will be given, no matter what. I like her, usually as soon as she is published, I am right there. I picked it up as soon as it was released and ultimately it was not up to her usual. Sorry about that....I'll still buy the next novel.
I got the kindle version. And the lack of stars is for the lousy formatting, not the book. The pages are disjointed, i start a sentence at the end of one page, and on the next...nothing. Goes off into an entirely different paragraph. I've tried ten pages, but there is no continuity, and it's driving me nuts. Buy the hard bound, the kindle version leaves much to be desired
I have read almost all of Adrianna Trigiana’s books. And loved all of them. This one did not measure up. Tony was one of the two main characters but she didn’t develop what was going on in his head. He lost his way early on in the marriage but never looked inside of him. Near the end of the book, she makes him even more pathetic with graphic detail. This book did not carry the beauty of the Italian characters that her other books did.
First the good news--I think the placing the two main characters in Italian immigrant families in Big Band Swing Era could have been a fantastic premise for a love story. I could practically SMELL the macaroni cooking on the stove, hear the horns tooting in the band, and the Italian family dynamics seemed extremely true to life. Now the bad news--I'm trying to figure out why I just didn't buy this love story between Chi Chi and Tony. I think it's because the character of Chi Chi was too much of a combination of the modern era woman (she doesn't want to get married or have children, she wants her own career in music, and she also invests in government bonds on her own, and even renegotiates mortgage rates with the bank for god's sake!) I'm sorry, but for a woman from an immigrant family in the 1930s-1940s to act that way just doesn't ring true. And if such a woman DID exist in that era--wouldn't she be smart enough to kick this womanizing mama's boy to the curb LONG before they had a romance? Tony and Chi Chi didn't get together until long into the story which was super boring, and you certainly weren't rooting for them to finally kiss. Quite the contrary. You were like, "Run, sister, run!"This guy Tony simply wasn't even halfway good enough for such a supposedly smart woman and how the marriage all ended was pretty predictable. Their whole relationship was just sad. Anyway--I wrote this review because the book is kind of expensive, and the "love story" really is not worth it. I say, pass!
I think a book is really well written if after having read it you feel as if you saw a movie...that is how I felt on finishing this book. I loved the Italian family feel of it, you could feel what it is like to be part of a family and sitting around the table eating macaroni and gravy! The characters were so well defined I felt a closeness to them, a sadness for Saverio, a great admiration for Chi Chi and her strength. I read one review where someone was actually complaining about the weight of the book! I found this a little odd...I LOVE a good thick book and when it's a good book I'm a little sad to reach the end. This book ended well but I have to admit, I could have kept reading. There were a few slow spots here and there but overall, the story held my interest and there were moments where I smiled and a couple where I had tears so overall for me this was a good read.
I have been a faithful reader of Ms. Trigiani for years, always so happy when there is a new release. I was underwhelmed by her last 2 books but was still excited to read Tony's Wife. It was well worth the wait! The characters and storyline are well thought out and so engaging. I was very much reminded of her earlier works; Lucia, Lucia and Queen of the Big Time. I was completely immersed in the story and could not wait to see what happened next. Tony's Wife is just wonderful read.
I usually LOVE Trigiani's novels, they have been funny with rich characters that reflect my own Italian family, warts and all!! This story was so disappointing because it was not uplifting at all, it was actually depressing. I don't know why the author chose to include so many characters dying, I suppose she was trying to reflect the resiliency of the main character Chi Chi. I also think the writing was not up to par with her last novels. Please write another one, Adriana, but make it in keeping with your previous work!
This was not a favorite of mine and I am HUGE fan. Characters and locations were plentiful... but could have done without the multiple wives and Chi Chi’s demise. Could have had a less dreary ending.. I was just disappointed! Write another likeThe Shoemakers Wife or The Macaroni Factory or any stories with the rich Italian family background....Just saying........
