I enjoyed this, although as others have noted, it is a bit over the top with the mediocre journalism. For comparison, it is somewhat better written than The Skeleton Crew, a similar book, which was just awful.Interesting subject and some details I had not read elsewhere. For whatever reason, Frank Bender's sexual proclivities are often emphasized in discussions of his work. I imagine, to give a picture of the whole man, ie, make him 3 dimensional? At any rate, I am glad Mr Bender's vice ran to sexual escapades, and not drugs or alcohol, as we might never have seen his work.Well worth picking up a used copy, which is not really true of The Skeleton Crew.

The author covers the period from 1990, when a varied group of seasoned investigators began meeting to discuss cold cases, to recently. Most of the cases are regional and did not receive national noteriety. The core group of 3 founders is discussed most thoroughly, but other members are also discussed. One fascinating tidbit that I gleaned is related to the common perception that serial murder is more common than in the past: one of the investigators states (paraphrasing) "in the past you had to be a Marquis de Sade to have the resources for mass murder and sadism, now any misfit with a panel van, a minimum wage job and a twisted psyche has the time and mobility." Frank Bender, the artist who sculpted the age-progressed likeness that led to the capture, after 2 decades, of Lizt, the mild-mannered accountant who executed his entire family is one of the founders. If you want to be impressed and inspired by investigators and techniques that have solved some very cold cases you may enjoy this-I first read this a few years ago and again on kindle yesturday, and enjoyed it even more the second time.

This is book is not for the faint of heart and this is nothing like any Sherlock Holmes book I've ever read. So if you are looking for a little mystery, romance, or suspense then this is not the book for you. This is book based on actual events with real people and the real monsters that live out in our world. The book was more than I had bargained for with stories that chilled my bones and gave me a nightmare or two. All because it made it all too clear that monsters really do exist and they don't hide in closets or under your bed with horns coming out of their heads and razor sharp teeth but rather they are right next door disguised as that sweet smiling neighbor or maybe your religious leader with that all too uncomfortable touch on the shoulder. The book pulled me in from the start and kept my attention enough to keep wanting to read it whenever time permitted but there were times I wish I had never read about this murder or that... Some stories left an indelible impression that leaves me feeling sick when I think about them. One story in particular I wish they had left out but I understand it was needed to lay the groundwork for the next case. This book for me is what I call "A One Off" because reading it once was for me enough and I feel no need to revisit the characters and the stories. I liked the book enough that I liked it and enjoyed it for what it was but I didn't loved it only of the subject matter being so dark and disturbing. I can't see myself ever wanting to relive the stories of the victims and their demise seeing that these stories derive from real crime stories and this is why I call this book "A One Off" or "One and Done". But for those who enjoy the dark, disturbing, and true crimes sort of reading then this is the book for you.

I mistakenly believed this book would offer something other than what one can locate about various case online. It doesn't. For example, in a chapter entitled "Murder in the Cathedral," Capuzzo summarizes the basic information in the 1962 murder of 9-year-old Carol Ann Dougherty inside a Catholic church in Bristol, Penn., and quotes William Fleisher as saying: "It was the priest. We all knew it was the priest," without providing any evidence to support Fleisher's claim. He [Capuzzo] ends the chapter by writing: "Within days, the Vidocq Society had formed a task force to bring the killer of Carol Ann Dougherty to justice." According to the book, the Vidocq Society began its investigation of this case in 1992 -- 25 years ago! and the case remains unsolved to this day.

This is one of the best books I have read about the men and women who go out there and take on the monsters who feed on the weak ones of the culture. This group called "The Murder Room" started as a lunch between 3 of the top investigative minds in the world. They began meeting once a month and when some of their colleagues heard about it, they moved the lunch to the room where Thomas Jefferson signed the Declaration of Independence. They have lunch and then one of the group will bring out a cold case that has been troubling the people investigating it. They will discuss it-surprisingly solving the crime on the spot-and then some will investigate and they meet in a month. If you are an aspiring investigator or a policeman that wants to sharpen his chops, this is the book for you. Scotland Yard refers to one of these gentlemen as Sherlock Holmes and he proves it.

I never heard of Eugene Vidocq or the Vidocq Society until I read this book. I enjoyed it. I knew only of Frank Benderthrough the case of John List, but I liked others from the Society especially psychologist Richard Walter. Howeverat the start, maybe it is due to the author's writing style, it was hard to get into it until I read some of the members'lives and then into the cases, it got more enjoyable. Also, i would have liked more on some of the cases featured.Still, it is a must read for any true crime fan.
