About the Author
MARTIN BOSSENBROEK is an associate professor and historian at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. He graduated from the Free University of Amsterdam in 1980 and received his doctorate from the University of Leiden in 1992. He is the author of many scholarly articles, and The Boer War is his seventh published book. Translator YVETTE ROSENBERG was born in Johannesburg and educated at the universities of Cape Town and Natal. After immigrating to the Netherlands, she was employed as a translator and editor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague from 1983 to 2005. Since 1995 she has also worked on numerous freelance translation projects, including for the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. She lives in Amsterdam and Cape Town.

Boer war, I didn't even knew what a Boer was. Well, they are Dutch from South Africa. While reading this book, I thought I was reading about American Civil War, the similitude is there, in fact, US Civil War is mentioned in this book, and the American war for independence from England. Is exactly what the Boers wanted to be a free State, free from England. Whoever loves history books, this one is a-must-read.
Very well written and historically accurate. Descriptions of major battles, rampant sickness among British troops, Boer farm burnings and concentration camps.
God, this was an enthralling book. I’ve left very few reviews but I couldn’t put this book down so I felt the need to tell anyone curious about it, or the war itself, just buy it. It reads like a novel, and every chapter leaves you wondering what happens next, even if you already know the outcome. Just a phenomenal history.
